Eucomis Bicolor. Pineapple Lily
EUCOMIS bicolor
\nCommonly known as the Pineapple Lily or Pineapple Flower.
\nNative to South Africa Eucomis bicolor is a bulbous perennial with a basal rosette of wavy strap-like green leaves.
\nFrom June to September purple spotted stems approx. 50cm tall are produced and each one bears a raceme of densely packed small greenish/cream star-shaped flowers with each petal edged in dark purple/maroon.
\nEach spike of blooms is topped with a crown-like tuft of leaves and when in full bloom the origin of the common name becomes very obvious.
\nPerfect for planting in a sunny border but Eucomis bicolor is spectacular in pots and containers on the patio where it will give a vibrant display of flowers throughout the summer and even into early autumn.
\nDespite its exotic appearance the Pineapple Lily is surprisingly hardy and is quite easy to grow.
\nThey can be successfully grown outdoors in southern parts of the UK but in the more northern areas they are best grown in pots or containers and moved to a frost-free position for the winter months.
\nWhen flowering has finished in autumn Eucomis bicolor should be allowed to die back naturally, this encourages a bigger and better display of flowers the following year.
\nRoyal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
\n All pictures used are of mature plants in full bloom and are for illustration purposes only, they may not reflect plants at all times of the year.
\nOur plants of Eucomis bicolor are supplied ex. 9cm pots, they can be planted out immediately but better results may be obtained if they are grown on for a short time in a slightly larger container before transplanting to their final growing positions.

\nWe ask all our buyers to remember Eucomis plants are living items and their appearance changes with the seasons. Please don’t panic if the plant you receive looks different to the image on the website. This is quite normal and not a matter for any worry or concern, it is likely to be in perfect condition for the time of year. Particularly in autumn and winter many shrubs will lose their leaves and look rather bare, gaunt and stick-like and from August onwards many perennial plants may not even be showing above the soil.\n\nWe want you to be happy with your purchase and all our Pineapple Lily plants are checked and inspected visually before packing. at . . Due to the nature of the item we cannot accept any responsibility for their failure after planting as pests, disease, poor horticultural practice, extremes of weather and many other factors outside our control all take their toll.
