Tennessee Walkers are known for their gaits, which are extremely pleasant for riders: "the walk", "running walk" and "edge". Even the foal instinctively senses these gaits and loves to show them off as they frolic around and play on the paddock. All Tennessee Walkers are descended from a black foal named Black Allen, born in 1886. Black Allen did not like trotting, but much preferred fast ambling gaits ("walking" and "running").
